Sweet Temptation is one of Guisborough’s true gems. A store that appeals to everyone – from little ones to adults, who can’t help but feel that child-like excitement when admiring the wall of sweets and treats that you see in Sweet Temptation.
The striking pink exterior of the Chaloner Street shop makes it hard to miss. Inside you’ll find sweets and chocolate of every kind – traditional sweets, American candy and luxury hampers.
The shop is owned by Peter Milburn – whether you know it or not, we can guarantee you’ll have been in one of his businesses! Driven and passionate about seeing his town grow and prosper, we spoke to Peter about Sweet Temptation.
What made you decide to start the business?
Sweet Temptation is a family business owned by my wife Liz and I. We have run a bespoke candle shop, Candlewick in Chaloner Street for nearly 10 years now and when the sweet shop over the road came on the market Liz was very keen on taking it over. It has similarities to Candlewick in that it is niche, and was a business we felt we could develop by adding more quality ranges and work the two businesses together, which has worked successfully to date.
How have you found adapting to restrictions and social distancing measures?
Obviously like all other businesses in the town, we have had to adapt to the circumstances since last March. Initially with the full lockdown, then mid summer we started to provide a Covid safe delivery service with contactless deliveries, using appropriate PPE and following comprehensive covid safe cleaning protocols whilst preparing and delivering items. When we were allowed to open again we were limited to 2 customers in store at any time which we adapted to, ensuring hand sanitising and masks were adhered to.
Have the local community been supportive throughout the restrictions?
When we first began the delivery service, the reaction from customers around the area was fantastic. The support has continued right through the November closure, over the Christmas period and now into this current lockdown. Customers’ attitudes have changed within each period of this pandemic and hopefully we have been able to adapt with them to provide the type of service they require.
What makes sweet temptation stand out?
Since we took over Sweet Temptation we have tried to create that old fashioned sweet shop feel but with extra ranges such as luxury Belgian chocolates and American sweets. We have then extended this to more bespoke products such as our Sweet Explosions and Pizza Boxes which can be modified to suit all tastes and requests. We aim to go that extra mile with our service and as such have now teamed up with another local company to offer an online order platform for our products which can be delivered the same day if required. We are always conscious that what we are providing is the little luxuries of life, and so aim to give excellent value whilst doing so.
Do you have any plans for the future?
To cater for ever changing needs and keep the ranges fresh we are constantly looking at new ranges, products and gift ideas. We have just launched half a dozen new variations on our pizza boxes and also being conscious of giving great value we have introduced a loyalty scheme and sweet subscription service, which gives the customer free sweet boxes for their continued support. We have a whole raft of new ideas lined up starting with our Valentines and Mothers Day offerings which will be launched shortly so please check out our Facebook page or order platform on sweettemptation.etable.ltd for news and place your orders early for delivery.
