Business In Focus: The Monk

For this month’s Business In Focus feature we were lucky enough to be able to spend some time with family owned ‘ The Monk’. For those of you who perhaps have been hiding under a rock and haven’t heard of one of our town’s most popular premium late night venues. You will find them directly across from the priory grounds and it’s a must visit venue in our eyes.

The place is tastefully decorated to a premium level, you can feel it in the furnishings, the menu, the design and simply the atmosphere.

Offering an extensive selection of both local and global drink brands, they cater for functions, run regular events and are an amazing local bar for popping in for date night.

We sat down with owners Peter and Alan to find out a little more.

You are a family owned establishment we understand? Tell us a bit about the team over at the Monk?

The Monk is a family based establishment run by brothers Alan & Peter Milburn who created this unique lounge bar from the old Priory Saddlery with the help of a previous business partner. The bar team here at The Monk are all local and have through their hard work and dedication helped re-establish the identity of the bar post lockdown.

What makes you different from other bars in town?

Here at The Monk, we have always specialised in quality hand made cocktails, well cared for and served hand pulled ales and unique beers and ciders from around the world. Our range of gins is second to none, especially our ranges of locally produced products. We aim to provide a 5 star experience for our customers whether that be just popping in for pre meal drink, attending one of our many events or holding your own private bespoke function.

How has the business changed since reopening?

We have been open now for 5 years and have used the opportunity of the lockdown to redesign our bar, upgrade our soft furnishings and décor and add new products to our drinks offering. On the management side of things, The Monk is now solely owned by Peter and Alan who always welcome ideas and suggestions from customers and where possible try to implement.

We often see private functions running in the venue, does this mean you are open for bookings?

Whilst we have always welcomed and accommodated private functions here at The Monk, since lockdown we have extended this to include weekends, driven by our customers desire to meet again with their family and friends. This has grown considerably, we hope by our 5 star reputation of providing a bespoke quality venue for events that our customers wish to remember for a long time. With regards to private functions be they; engagements, weddings, birthdays, christenings or baby showers our aim is always to guarantee satisfaction for the client down to the smallest detail.

The quality of our drinks offering reflects our key aim of providing quality products to all our customers from as wide a range as possible. We particularly like working with local companies such as; Poetic License, Steel River and Lemon Top Gins, featuring on our popular gin tasting experiences. On a beer front we were happy to assist in the launch of Guisborough Brewery and have held recent Tap Takeovers showcasing Crafty Monkey and Guisborough Brewery, and following a customer request we are now a stockist of Play Brew Co cans of craft ale.

We continually strive for the new and unique products recently bringing O’Donnell Moonshine to The Monk along with our new range of Smirnoff draught cocktails.

In an attempt not to stand still, we are constantly upgrading our cocktail menus and creating new ways to enjoy the ranges we stock such as our gin and rum trees and our popular beer tasting board.

You run a great calendar of events. Many of which we have attended. What’s the diary looking like for the next few months?

Following a successful range of autumn events, our aim is to carry these into the New Year with a gin night and beer tasting evening once a month. We already have Harrogate Gin, Whitley Neil and Dead Mans Fingers Rum attending (details to be announced on our Facebook page). We will also be continuing with our fortnightly karaoke evenings, Kavanna Klub and Medium Evenings hoping also to add to those Cinema night and games evenings.

We still host our weekly Sunday evening quiz, hosted by Peter and Alan and there is always room for more teams to join to try and win our rollover prize.

Our New Years Eve Party Night will be one of the best nights in town again however sadly we have already sold out of tickets for this event. For all details of events check out our Facebook page.
